Control room overhaul

THE CHALLENGE

An ageing CCTV estate was failing to meet the standards needed across a multi-building campus with high foot traffic, busy external areas and complex perimeter requirements. The brief was to replace it entirely with modern IP CCTV and upgrade the control room infrastructure to manage the significantly larger camera count.

THE SOLUTION

G.M.E installed 124+ IP cameras — a mix of fixed and PTZ units — across academic buildings, walkways, car parks and perimeter zones. The control room was fully upgraded with new servers and switches. The project was delivered in phases, with each section commissioned and handed over before work began on the next, keeping the campus fully operational throughout.

KEY FEATURES INSTALLED

OUTCOME

The campus now operates a modern, high-resolution CCTV estate with a control room built to scale. Image quality, system reliability and ease of management have all improved significantly, giving the security team one platform to manage the whole site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. G.M.E uses a phased delivery approach where each section is installed, commissioned and handed over before moving to the next. The rest of the campus remains fully operational and monitored throughout the project, with no gaps in security coverage during the transition.

Fixed cameras cover a set field of view and are ideal for entrances, corridors and specific zones. PTZ cameras can be remotely controlled to track movement, zoom in on incidents and cover large open areas like car parks or courtyards. G.M.E recommends the right camera type for each location as part of the site survey and design process.

Older servers and network switches are often the bottleneck in large CCTV systems — causing slow playback, dropped frames, storage failures and limited camera capacity. When upgrading cameras, the underlying infrastructure must handle the higher data volumes that modern IP cameras produce. G.M.E designs the full stack — cameras, network and servers — as one integrated system.

G.M.E regularly wins and delivers on public procurement contracts across higher education, the HSE and other public bodies. The company is PSA licensed, ISO 9001 certified, IS EN 50131/50132 compliant and holds Business All-Star Accreditation — providing all documentation, certificates and references typically required for formal tendering.

G.M.E configures secure, role-based remote viewing so authorised managers and security staff can access live and recorded footage from any location. Access is permission-gated and fully logged. Remote viewing gives senior staff and estates managers additional oversight from desktop or mobile without replacing the on-site manned monitoring function.
